S4 Other Learning Experiences: Embracing Inclusivity and Understanding

On March 15, 2024, our school had the privilege of participating in an event called “Embracing Inclusivity and Understanding” that aimed to cultivate students’ values and promote inclusivity for individuals with disabilities.

 

This event was organized by the Hong Kong Federation of Handicapped Youth, and our S4 students actively engaged in a series of experiential activities, including simulations of visual impairment, wheelchair use, and the effects of stroke. These experiences provided our students with a profound understanding of the difficulties and challenges faced by individuals with diverse abilities, fostering empathy and raising awareness about the importance of inclusivity and understanding.

 

Throughout the event, our students personally experienced the reliance on auditory and tactile senses for individuals with visual impairment, the limitations in mobility for wheelchair users, and the impact of post-stroke conditions on language and motor functions. These firsthand experiences have deeply instilled in our students a greater respect and appreciation for the unique abilities of each individual, emphasizing the significance of treating others with empathy and acceptance.

 

Moreover, this event not only heightened our students’ awareness of inclusivity, but also nurtured their interpersonal and communication skills. They learned how to build positive relationships with individuals of varying abilities, approaching them with respect and care, and actively contributing to the creation of a more inclusive and understanding society.

 

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the organizers, the Hong Kong Federation of Handicapped Youth, for providing this invaluable learning opportunity to our students. Through their participation in this event, our students gained firsthand experience and deepened their understanding of the importance of inclusivity.
